Gymnastics & Kindergym

Gymnastics StepsGymnastics is the ideal way to tumble, jump and spin into fun and fitness at your local YMCA! Gymnastics truly is the program to help children develop in body, mind and spirit.

We offer a range of gymnastics classes for children from the age of 15 months. Our programs encourage children to participate in a safe, structured and child friendly environment, and offers age and skill based progression from kinder gym through to competitive National Levels classes.

Jamboree Heights YMCA also offers services and programs (Judo and YMCA Playschool) that cater for children from 10 months of age.

  • Gym Bubs and Gym Tots (walking to 4 years)

YMCA Gymnastics - Gym-totsChildren attend with a parent (or other adult) for a stimulating 45 minute movement and play experience with opportunities to explore and develop their physical abilities. Activities include gross motor skills such as running, jumping, hopping, hanging, climbing, rolling balancing and swinging, plus many finer motor activities to stimulate foot/hand/eye co-ordination, all in a safe environment. Children benefit by developing self-confidence, body awareness and body control while laying good foundations of balance, agility and general physical co-ordination.

  • Mini Gym (4 - 5 years)

This program is an extension of Gym Tots except without parent participation. Mini Gym caters for children 4 to 5yrs of age. The program helps the development of motor control including coordination and balance, increased body awareness and enhanced social development. For e.g. learning to share, take turns and the ability to follow instructions. This is also a great help.

  • Junior Gym (Prep & Year One)

This is a beginner gymnastics program preparing them for the more specialist Girls and Boys Levels program, which will teach your child the basics on all the gymnastics apparatus; beam, bars, floor, vault, rings and pommel.. Our program provides an opportunity to develop existing abilities at an individual’s pace while working in small groups. Your child will work on a series of pre-set skills, which are developed through our curriculum. An assessment will be carried out by the instructors each term to see when they are ready to move up.

  • Boys and Girls Levels 1-3 (6½ years plus)

This is the early stage in the development of gymnastic ability and success. Children follow the National Levels curriculum and are assessed in the Club at each level before progressing to the next. Individual competition is available at our Club Championships each year.

  • Development Squads for Boys and Girls / Levels 4 Plus (By selection)

YMCA Gymnastics - Competitve GymnasticsWhen children reach the higher levels, the difficulty of their work increases and this requires more time to be spent in the pursuit of excellence. Assessment is conducted at external Gymnastics Queensland events enabling progression to the next level. Individual competition is available at our Club Championships each year as well as invitational competitions, Regional and State Championships.

  • Rhythmic Gymnastics

YMCA Rhythmic GymnasticsRhythmic gymnasts use their body and 5 hand-held apparatus: rope, hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. These apparatus must be used in both hands, thrown into the air and be kept in constant motion and the skills gained through the use of these include gross motor, balance and co-ordination, flexibility and strength.

As you can see our gymnastics clubs offer both recreational and competitive streams of gymnastics training. This enables us to cater for those who wish to participate simply for the enjoyment, as well as those who wish to compete at a club, regional or state level.

Our clubs are registered with Gymnastics Qld and (except the Redlands Club) are rated a 'Star 3 Club' (National Standard) within the Gymnastics Australia Club 10 framework. This means that we adhere to a strict set of guidelines for club management, coach education, and program implementation set out by Gymnastics Australia helping us to provide your children with the best possible classes. All our coaches are accredited with Gymnastics Australia and hold a current Blue card for working with children and a current Senior First Aid Qualification.
